Lippische Ghana-Togotage 2026

“Together in Christ” and the Church of Lippe invite you to the Lippe Ghana and Togo Days. This event is held for the fifth time as part of the partnership with the Evangelical Presbyterian Churches in these two countries.

Saturday, 9 May, 6.30 pm: Concert …

The Ghana-Togo Days will open with a concert at the Christuskirche in Detmold entitled ‘Unity and Diversity’. The Ghanaian singer Daniel Dabi (Oldenburg) will present a musical crossover featuring spiritual songs in Ewe, English and German.

… and exhibition opening

Following the concert, an exhibition by the Togolese painter Attikpasso Lawson (Erfurt) will open. Entitled “Ein Antlitz verleihen” (Giving a Face), it will be on display from 10 to 25 May, Monday to Friday from 3 pm to 5 pm, at the Christuskirche in Detmold. Lawson’s paintings explore the life of a Togolese person in Germany and their engagement with their homeland.

Wednesday, 13 May, 6.30 pm: Film Togoland

On Wednesday, a film and discussion evening entitled “Togoland Projections” will take place at Christuskirche. Shortly before the First World War, the “African explorer” and film director Hans Schomburgk undertook a film expedition to Togo. More than a century later, Jürgen Ellinghaus is travelling to the original filming locations of Schomburgk’s films with a mobile cinema. Together with the Togolese audience, he explores the historical context of the film images and the effects of colonialism.

Thursday, 14 May, 3 pm: City walk focusing on the colonial era

On Thursday, there will be a city walk entitled ‘Tracing the Colonial Era in Detmold’. The meeting point is the Lippische Landesbibliothek, Hornsche Str. 41, Detmold. Bielefeld-based historian Dr Barbara Frey will take participants on a roughly two-hour exploration of Detmold: what do the cityscape and the city’s culture of remembrance reveal about the colonial era?

Friday, 15 May, 6.30 pm: Concert by the ‘Efoa’ project choir

The “Efoa” project choir invites you to a concert and a communal meal at Christuskirche in Detmold. Since January, the small choir has been rehearsing under the direction of Derek Nyikplorkpo, a South-North volunteer with the North German Mission. Afterwards, there will be a communal Ghanaian meal with current and former South-North volunteers from the Nordeutsche Mission in Bremen (Bremen Mission).

Sunday, 17 May, 11 am to 2.30 pm: Lippe Convention ‘PoC’

On Sunday, 17 May, the first Lippe Convention “People of Colour” (PoC) will take place at Christuskirche in Detmold. People of Colour live in Lippe too. The Lippe Convention invites everyone to come together and support one another.

Sunday, 17 May at 3.30 pm: International Worship Service

“Together in Christ” then invites you to “The whole world in worship” – the international Worship Service at Christuskirche in Detmold. Derek Nyikplorkpo is coming to the end of his year as a South-North volunteer. The service will include a time of thanksgiving and blessing for him, followed by coffee, rhubarb crumble and a chance to chat.

Sunday, 24 May, at 6.30 pm: Closing event of the exhibition

On 24 May, the Lippe Ghana and Togo Days will end with the closing event ‘Giving a Face’ at the Christuskirche in Detmold. The painter Attikpasso Lawson will guide visitors through the exhibition of his paintings.

The events are supported by the North German Mission in Bremen, Bread for the World and the Catholic Fund, as well as individual sponsors.
